Applications of Sodium oleate in Drug Delivery

  • Common ingredients of liposomes

While liposomes have been proved to be useful as drug carriers, they require complex production ways using organic solvents, exhibit low efficiency at entrapping drugs and are difficult to perform on large scales. Nanostructured lipid carriers and solid lipid nanoparticles have been explored for overcomeing some of the shortcomings. Stabilizing agents such as surfactants and other coating materials are components of nanostructured lipid carriers and solid lipid nanoparticles. Sodium oleate is commonly used as an ingredient of surfactants and the function of surfactants is to reduce the interfacial tension between the aqueous phases and lipid and improve the stabilities of the resultant formulations.

  • Hydrophobic ion pairing as the anionic counterion

Sodium oleate is also used in hydrophobic ion pairing as the anionic counterion. Hydrophobic ion pairing has been proved to be one of the crucial ways to modulate the solubility of charged hydrophilic molecules ranging from small molecules to large ones. Hydrophobic ion pairing refers to the highly efficient encapsulation of charged hydrophilic molecules into nanocarriers or nanoparticles, which can be used for drug delivery. With this approach, studies have reported encapsulation efficiencies up to 100% and drug loadings up to 30%.

  • Sodium oleate in asnanobeacons

The nanobeacons have also been considered as a promising method for tumor-related mRNA detection, regulation, and multiscale imaging. Iron oxide nanoparticle is a crucial Part of the nanobeacons. A report showed that a cubic-shaped iron oxide nanoparticle core nanobeacon will be able to deliver an HSP90α mRNA-specific molecular beacon into living cells. Moreover, sodium oleate is commonly used as an ingredient of iron oxide nanoparticles.

Other Functions of Sodium Oleate

  • Modified lysozyme

Lysozyme was usually modified with a fatty acid, sodium oleate, via an ion-pairing mechanism. Ionic binding between an anionic carboxylic group of sodium oleate and basic amino groups in lysozyme was primarily utilized to form lysozyme-oleate complex.

It is widely accepted that sodium oleate is central to the fatty acid treatment of HepG2 cells and primary human hepatocytes.
