SLNs have numerous potential applications in research, clinical medicine, and drug delivery, encapsulating drugs within nanocarriers. It is known that SLNs have some potential limitations, such as low drug loading capacity, burst drug release behavior, and potential drug expulsion upon storage. To overcome the above limitations, the incorporation of liquid lipid to solid lipid, the second generation of SLN, nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC), was developed and found to enhance imperfections of SLNs and achieved more space for molecules, thus increasing the loading capacity and prevented the drug expulsion. The lipid-like glyceryl behenate, glyceryl palmitostearate, and macrogol-15-hydroxystearate are generally used to prepare these NLCs.

Reverse micelles (RMs) are stable, transparent, and homogenous systems composed of an oil and a surfactant blend. The hydrophilicity of their core renders them superior in the solubilization of hydrophilic drugs inside the core. In a study, molecules were loaded within the core of RMs to permit their effective formulation and utilization. The selection of glycerol hydroxystearate surfactants in the preparation of RM was based on their biocompatibility and safety. Moreover, it is composed of three hydroxystearate chains, which may lead to the enlargement of the core of RM, endorsing RM stability and providing large space for high drug loading.
